The Science of Soma

A relentless desire to go beyond

We believe the world's problems can be solved through great design and an unyielding passion for disrupting the status quo. Our goal has always been to build a happier and healthier world for our customers, as well as those who lack access to clean drinking water.

That's why we recruited top experts to help us design a filter that produces the best tasting and healthiest water possible, using sustainable materials. It's also why we support clean drinking water projects globally with our nonprofit partner, charity: water.

The foremost filtration expert

David Beeman has over 35 years of experience designing proprietary filters for industry leaders such as Starbucks, Peet's and Keurig. We partnered with him not only for his filtration innovations, but also for his deep care for the environment.

Made of sustainable plant-based materials

The Soma filter uses the power of nature to cleanse your water. Our catalytic activated coconut shell carbon is naturally absorbent, meaning you can feel good about the taste and health of your water. The filter casing is made from a plant-based material, rather than the normal petroleum-based plastic.

A powerful process

Before our coconut shells become carbon granules (and protectors of your water) they are heat treated to become so porous that each gram of carbon has over 1,000 square meters of surface area. That's more space to catch contaminants like chlorine so they don't end up in your water.

The Water Quality Association has tested and certified the Soma filter to NSF/ANSI Standard 42 requirements for the reduction of chlorine, taste and odor. Their gold seal standard is known as a key benchmark for any reputable filter and a sign of innovation.

In addition to extensive in-house testing, we work with independent third party laboratories, like Pace Laboratories, to test the Soma filter and to prepare for further certifications.

What does the Soma filter out?

Our filter has been officially tested and certified by the Water Quality Association (WQA) to NSF/ANSI Standard 42 requirements for the reduction of chlorine, taste and odor.

How much does each filter process?

The Soma filter is designed to process 40 gallons of water. For most customers, that's 2 months of usage. This is why our Fresh Filters program delivers new replacement filters every two months.

Does the Soma filter out fluoride?

Soma does not filter out fluoride, and is meant only for microbiologically safe drinking water. Please note that contaminants mentioned here are not necessarily in your water source. You'll need to reach out to your local municipality to understand what chemicals or substances are in your water.

How long does it take to filter my water?

On average, you can fill your entire Soma (about six 8-oz. glasses of water) in five minutes or less. The Soma filter was designed to balance efficacy and speed. Filtration occurs when the coconut shell carbon has enough contact time to absorb contaminants. That's why we designed the Soma filter to be thorough enough to be effective, while also being fast enough so you're not kept waiting.

How much do replacement filters cost?

Replacement filters cost $12.99, which includes free shipping. You can customize the ship date of your next filter, if necessary, or cancel at any time.

How do I purchase new filters?

When you purchase Soma, you are automatically enrolled in our Fresh Filters program. This sends replacement filters to your home every two months, and costs less than a quarter a day.
